1.) Can Velu read Tamil and English? How do you know?

Ans. Velu cannot read English. When he looks at pictures on signboards, he cannot understand the writing in English. But he can read Tamil because he reads the Tamil sigs, Central Jail.

(i) What is she referring to?

Ans. She is referring to Central Jail.


(ii) What does she mean when she says, "If you are not careful..."?


Ans. She means to say that if he is not careful, he will be in the Central Jail.

She says something a little later which means the same. The sentence is "just don't get caught, that's all".

Ans. The girl led Velu to a big building named 'Sri Rajarajeshwari Prasanna Kalyana Mandapam'.

Ans. They hot two squashy bananas and a vada to eat there.

Ans. Tyres and plastic are the strange material huts made out of.


(ii) Why does Velu find them strange?

Ans. Velu finds them strange because in his village, the houses are made of mud and palm leaves.


2.) What sort of things did Jaya and children like her collect and what did they do with those things?

Ans. Jaya and other children liked to collect paper, plastic and glass. They sold those things to Jam Baazar Jaggu.


3.) Is Velu happy or unhappy to find work? Give a reason for your answer.

Ans. Velu is unhappy to find work. He scratches hid head and sighed. But he has to accept this work because he has no other alternative idea.
